What You Need to Know About the Motherhood Penalty

What You Need to Know About the Motherhood PenaltyWhat You Need to Know About the Motherhood Penalty5While you may be familiar with Equal Pay Day in April, did you know there is also an Equal Pay Day for moms in May? While Equal Pay Day in 2017 marked April 4 as the date when all working womens salaries finally caught up to the pay that men received for the previous year, moms Equal Pay Day this year will be celebrated on May 23, since that is how long it takes working moms to catch up.In other words, the typical amount of extra time that it takes working mothers to achieve the monetary equivalent to what working fathers receive in one year is five months. That means working female parents have to work nearly half a year more than their male counterparts for the same pay. (Most women of color have to wait even longer for their paychecks to catch up to mens.)According to the American Association of University Women (AAUW), moms typically earn only 73 cents for each dollar dads earn. T his motherhood penalty is a lesser-known part of the gender pay gap.Knowing that dads get a nachschlag but moms get an added financial barrier at work, its important to do what you can to help mitigate this pay gap in your own career by using smart salary negotiation strategies. Here are a few negotiating tips to try andturn the tide on the motherhood penalty, until equal pay legislation catches up to where it needs to beFigure out how much youre worth- and then prove it.Arming yourself with data that shows average salary bands for your exact title and industry position in your area of the country gives you some ammunition to request a fair salary. Be sure that youve thoroughly prepared with facts and figures before entering any stage of salary negotiation, using websites like PayScale and Glassdoor to benchmark and fact-find the numbers you need to know.Dont blow the timing.Asking about money too early in the interview process is a faux pas, as is prematurely answering a recruiter o r hiring managers questions about your current compensation. If pressured to give numbers before youre ready, deflect the question back to your interviewers, seeing if you can get them to spill the beans first about the salary range for the position. The right time to get more specific is after you have a job offer in hand.If current comp is part of the negotiation, be sure to factor in your entire compensation package at the company where you now work- not just base salary, but bonus, equity, overtime pay, and the dollar value of big-ticket items in your benefits package.Avoid caving too soon. While youre no doubt eager to seal the deal and know that you have a new job in the bag, try to project confidence and avoid insecure, instant follow-up that suggests youre overeager to take the first number offered. When waiting for confirmation of your valid and data-driven salary request, silence can be more powerful than checking in to be sure you didnt lose the opportunity, or second-gues sing your ask and offering a lower figure before hearing back on the answer. As Jesse qualm, senior program manager at AAUW said in a recent press statement We know you cant negotiate your way around discrimination. But Rauch added that learning more about salary negotiation can help women take a critical step toward chipping away at their own personal pay gap.

5 Ways Introverts Can Thrive on Social Media Without Feeling Forced to Act Like Extroverts

5 Ways Introverts Can Thrive on Social Media Without Feeling Forced to Act Like Extroverts 5 Ways Introverts Can Thrive on Social Media Without Feeling Forced to Act Like Extroverts Being successful today means understanding social media. You need to be active on it to gain new customers, or, at minimum, to be aware of it to engage current customer conversations. I am actually an introvert, a Myers-Briggs Personality Test INFP. (Or, if you really want to get specific, I am an ambivert.) The struggle is real for ambitious people like myself, who need to master social media to keep the business thriving. Fortunately, we’re not only in the age of social media but in the age of social empowerment- namely through technology. Here’s how you can thrive online and still be true to your introverted self: 1. Follow Fewer People Like many journalists, Twitter became my platform of choice many years ago. I loved sharing varied opinions and conversations. I eventually started to feel suffocated, though- as if a continual sea of commentary was constantly thrashing me against the rocks. I realized that I was following too many people. I love initiating and enabling passionate, one-on-one conversations, and it was becoming debilitating to do that while following thousands of people. Instead, I took a drastic approach: Around 2012, I began culling the people I followed down to the most essential and insightful. It’s been tough, but I regularly keep my following group to around 300- the number of people I can consistently engage during the day. Instead, I use Twitter lists to keep up with other people without having the heavy news feed. Figure out how many people you can comfortably be connected with on your favorite social-media platform and stick with that number. 2. Go Away for a While As I learned in my week away from social media, fear of missing out (FOMO) is a bigger issue than actually missing something. You wouldn’t be in a conference call 24 hours a day, nor would you have a non-stop conversation for days on end. Why would you constantly be on social media? It requires the same social energy, so treat it like any other engagement. There are also very few businesses, apart from airports and hospitals, that actually require 24/7 media engagement. Take regular, planned breaks from social media, all based around the times when your business has the lightest online needs. 3. Treat It Like a Party I love parties, not because of the number of people together, but because the odds are higher that I will have a great, engaging one-on-one conversation with at least one or two people there. Social media is similar, in that you connect with people who resonate with you and carry a continual conversation through the platform, and maybe even offline. As an introvert, it makes sense to focus on having good conversations with a few key people, rather than trying to have superficial conversations with everyone who is talking. 4. Respect Your Introversion During my recent social media unplug, I realized how much I sacrificed my alone time to run my former startup, do more public speaking, and support my books. I’m proud that I pushed myself to grow, but I also realized that I needed to rest. Again, social media time requires the same type of energy as having a face-to-face conversation. Listen to your own social flow and respectfully stop engaging in noncrucial conversations when you need quiet. 5. Schedule Posts When Cuddlr was hitting the Apple Top 10, it was taking all my energy to keep up with the media requests, user feedback emails, and online responses. Scheduled posts became a life saver: Apps like Buffer and Hootsuite allowed me to write and preprogram announcements at moments when I had more social energy. I could then build in quiet time without worrying about the business’s social media going off the rails. Use free scheduling apps for preplanned content and get more time to yourself. For me, a turning point came when I saw social expert Susan Cain speak at the TED Conference. Her book Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking talks about how introverts can be extremely strong business people in this social-focused age. As I learned, our introversion doesn’t have to prevent us from soaring on social media. If you are an introvert like myself, how do you master your social-media presence? More From Inc. Do you earn enough to afford a house in the largest U.S. metros

Do you earn enough to afford a house in the largest U.S. metros Do you earn enough to afford a house in the largest U.S. metros Owning a home is one of the biggest financial milestones. Data from the  U.S. Census Bureau  indicates that the homeownership rate nationwide is 64.8%, slowly reversing a downward trend that started in 2004. Despite these recent gains, homeownership is still out of reach for many people. One of the main reasons for this is that  wages haven’t kept pace with soaring home prices, and many people are priced out of the real estate market.Fortunately, some parts of the U.S. are friendlier to potential homebuyers’ wallets than others. Our latest visualization illustrates the salary that a household needs to make in order to buy a median-priced home in the 50 largest metro areas in the U.S.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!  The data for this visualization comes from the mortgage information site  HSH Associates. In conducting their analysis, HSH compiled median-home price data from the National Association of Realtors, national mortgage rate data from Freddie Mac and the Mortgage Bankers Association of America, and property tax and homeowner’s insurance costs data to determine the annual salary it takes to afford a home (including principal, interest, property tax and homeowner’s insurance, or PITI) in the nation’s 50 largest metropolitan areas. The analysis also assumed a down payment of 20%.The top 5 metro areas with the highest salary required for buying a home1. San Jose, CA â€" $254,835.73 2. San Francisco,CA â€" $198,978.01 3. San Diego, CA â€" $131,640.79 4. Los Angeles, CA â€" $123,156.01 5. Boston, MA â€" $106,789.93The bottom 5 metro areas with the lowest salary required for buying a home1. Pittsburgh, PA â€" $37,659.86 2. Cleveland, OH â€" $40,437.72 3. Oklahoma City, OK â€" $41,335.41 4. Memphis, TN â€" $41,400.93 5. Indianapolis, IN â€" $42,288.92In general, metro areas in the Midwest and the South require lower salaries than metro areas on the West Coast and the East Coast. The most expensive metros are located in California, especially near Silicon Valley. For example, San Jose requires the highest salary ($254,835.73) for a median-priced home and San Francisco requires the second-highest salary ($198,978.01). Metros in the Northeast, like Boston ($106,789.93) and New York ($105,684.33) are similarly expensive. On the flip side, Pittsburgh only requires a salary of $37,659.86 to buy a median-priced home. Metro areas like Memphis ($41,400.93) and Oklahoma City ($41,335.41) require about one-sixth the salary required in San Jose.HSH notes that when looking at the nation overall, you would need to earn $61,453 in order to buy a home. However, 24 of the largest 50 metro areas require a higher salary to make it affordable. It’s also worth noting that even within metro areas, home prices and sa laries can differ by zip code or neighborhood, so final costs could vary even more. Overall, when deciding where to buy a home or look for a job, taking the area’s salaries and housing costs into consideration becomes even more important.Curious how this differs from the most expensive metro areas last year? 5 small changes to make now that have a big impact on your health

5 small changes to make now that have a big impact on your health 5 small changes to make now that have a big impact on your health Humans are very good at picking out  big goals  with the best of intentions and then struggling when it comes to sticking with them. Instead of giving yourself a  mountain to climb  (maybe an actual mountain, if that’s your thing), start off with something manageable. These five small changes are the first steps to eventually making those  long-term targets  for your health. Just don’t try to do them all at once.1. Exercise 20 minutes more a weekForget what phys ed class taught you: Your version of working out doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s.  Meghan Stevenson  is a certified running coach with the Road Runners of America and founder of virtual training website Your Best Run, whose focus is helping individuals meet their personal goals. “I started my running journey almost 15 years ago with just walking,” Stevenson explains. “I built up from 20 minutes to 90 minutes. When I got bored, I started running. Now I’ve completed marathons, and I run an average of 30 miles each week!” Whether you want to eventually build up to marathons or just want to make running a habit, Stevenson recommends combining running and walking to start. “Twenty minutes is fine!” she encourages. “Schedule it into your calendar like you would lunch with a friend or a meeting at work.”Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!It doesn’t have to be running:  Greg Pignataro, a certified strength and conditioning specialist at Grindset Fitness, says that you don’t even have to go to a gym to start your workout routine. “There are plenty of great exercises that don’t require any equipment and can be done in the comfort of your own home,” he tells us. “A five-minute routine of bodyweight-only exercises performed once a day can be a wonderful catalyst for positive change.” Skipping the hassle of going to the gym can help with the mental leap required to force yourself to work out, he explains. If you do want to go to a gym but are worried about other people judging you, Pignataro reassures us, “You’re not alone! However, between checking themselves out in the mirrors and fretting that someone is judging  them, hardly anyone is judging you!”2. Cut out one cigarette a daySmokers already know that quitting cigarettes is one of the best ways to improve their health. Licensed clinical social worker  Heather Senior Monroe, director of program development at  Newport Academy, confirms that people who cut down their cigarette usage can look forward to “improved lung capacity; better blood circulation; stronger immune system; enhanced sense of smell and sense of taste; and reduced risk of gum disease, heart disease, lung cancer, and chronic bronchitis.”Of course, smokers also know that it’s one of the hardest habits to kick. Reducing your cigarette use by one a day (then two, then three, etc.) is one way to try. “Quitting slow and steady gives a person a much smaller goal to focus on, which is a lot easier for some people to do compared to cutting down quickly or even going cold turkey,” says  Cedrina L. Calder, MD, a preventive medicine doctor in Nashville, TN. “Also, cutting back slowly may work better for someone who is not using nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), as it may allow their body to get better adjusted to receiving less nicotine if they slowly reduce the amount over a period of time.”However, there are some potential drawbacks to quitting cigarettes slowly. “Some people may not actually end up quitting,” Calder cautions. “They may cut down and start smoking less but still struggle to quit.” To refocus your goal,  Natasha Bhuyan, MD, a family medicine doctor with One Medical, recommends, “Try setting a final quit date. Write it down and stick it up on your bathroom mirror - it helps to have a goal to work toward, and a recurring reminder will offer you that daily nudge to stay on track.” And give yourself help. “Speak with your doctor about smoking cessation programs, which will help with medication management as well as behavioral therapy and will increase your chance of successfully quitting,” Calder advises.3. Eat one more fruit or vegetable a dayInstead of restricting what you eat, try introducing more fruits and vegetables. “Think in terms of adding nutrition to your diet rather than taking it out,” encourages  Alyssa Lavy, registered dietitian, certified dietitian nutritionist, and owner of Alyssa Lavy Nutrition Wellness. “Consider how to add vegetables to increase your nutrient intake, rather than using them as a way to decrease calories or replace a food that has a completely different nutrient value.” She recommends following your taste buds: “While someone may love bananas, someone else may not be able to stand them, so it’s best to think about which fruit or vegetable you would be open to incorporating into your diet. ”See it as a chance to get creative! “I always encourage clients to add a new food to one that they love, so that the new food is mixed with something familiar,” Lavy suggests. “For example, if you love mashed potatoes, perhaps add broccoli to them, or try including zucchini ‘zoodles’ in your pasta dish with sauce. Once that food becomes more familiar, preparing it in a variety of ways is helpful, because you may love a certain vegetable raw or roasted, but you may hate it steamed.” Healthy eating just got interesting!4. Have one fewer drink a weekThe line between a safe and fun amount of alcohol and heavy drinking that can lead to addiction is  a lot narrower  than many people realize. “For women, heavy drinking is more than three drinks a day or more than seven drinks a week, and for men it is more than four drinks a day or more than 14 drinks a week,” explains  Indra Cidambi, MD, medical director at the Center for Network Therapy in New Jersey. If you can stick to those limits long-term, you’ll experience better sleep, clearer skin, a reduced risk of breast cancer, and more energy, and you’ll potentially reduce your risk of heart disease and diabetes. If going teetotal for a full month or longer is too much for you, try saying no to one or two drinks each week. “The benefits of this slow and steady method is that total abstinence is not the immediate goal, and it gives the person time to introduce other fun activities to substitute for alcohol,” says Cidambi. She recommends looking at why you’re drinking more than is good for you: “If it’s due to boredom or lack of alternate activities, try finding different hobbies. If it’s your choice of friends, try expanding your social circle.” That said, as with smoking, some people will find reducing alcohol in this slow way harder than others. “For some, perfect moderation may be harder to achieve than total abstinence,” Cidambi admits. If you regularly find yourself on the “ all” side of all or nothing, it might be a good idea to see your doctor for extra advice.5. Sleep 30 minutes longer every nightMake this the year you finally get that early bedtime your sleepy body has been calling for. “Everyone out there should be getting between seven and nine hours of sleep each night,” asserts  Bill Fish, a certified sleep science coach and founder of sleep website  Tuck.com. “Sleep is now considered the third pillar of wellness to go along with diet and exercise.” And slow and steady works best. “Gradually change your bedtime by even as little at 10 minutes per night,” recommends Fish. “Set a reminder that will alert you at least 45 minutes before you want to be asleep. Give your body and mind time to decompress to ensure you are ready to get to sleep, whether that is with a warm shower, 15 minutes of a good book, some meditation, or any other ritual.”An extra 30 minutes of sleep might not seem like a lot, but it can really help. Therapist, l icensed social worker, and owner of Bright Spot Counseling  Ginger Houghton  says, “An increase of around 30 minutes of sleep for several nights in a row can help reduce daytime sleepiness, fatigue, and tension. If you can inch closer to an hour of additional sleep for a few consistent nights, studies show an increase in attention span and improved performance and response times. Additionally, people who are getting the right amount of sleep are also less prone to moodiness, binge-eating, and accidents.” When it comes to self-improvement, you can’t rush perfection. This article originally appeared on Brit + Co.You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

The best stretches to counter all your desk sitting

The best stretches to counter all your desk sitting The best stretches to counter all your desk sitting If you have a desk job, you’re kinda screwed. According to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics, people who work in these traditional office spaces spend 90 percent of their workday sitting - a minimum of 7.2 hours if you log eight hours each day. And all of that time spent stuck in a chair is wreaking havoc on your lower back.We spoke to with Audrey Abner, a physical therapist and the clinical director at Professional Physical Therapy in New York City, about exactly why too much desk time can create unwanted pressure on the lower back and the space in between the spinal disks.“Too much desk sitting can create unwanted pressure on your low back and between your spinal disks because of mechanical/postural stress to the spine and the muscles,” she said. “When you are in the vertical/upright position, you have to consider both gravity and weight, which act as compressive forces. When a person is sitting upright in a chair, the pressure between the discs i s measured at 140 kilograms. As one sits and begins to slouch forward, the pressure increases to 185 kilograms. This increase in pressure places more stress on the bony components, as well as the muscular components of your spine.”Ladders is now on SmartNews!Download the SmartNews app and add the Ladders channel to read the latest career news and advice wherever you go.Not sure if your lower back pain is related to your desk job? Consider the following list of symptoms: Inability to sit still and the need to shift positions in your chair to find a comfortable position Aching in the low back and buttock area Tightness in buttocks, or pain that travels to the legs and/or feet Pain that is worse with sitting, but better when standing Difficulty transferring to the standing position after sitting for a prolonged period Thankfully, relief is well within your means. Abner shared her five favorite stretches with us that help to mitigate these unwanted symptoms. Stretching plays a major role in treating low back pain because it promotes better blood flow to the muscles, providing oxygen and other important nutrients. Abner suggests stretching when the muscles are warm and pliable, like during work breaks, after a workout or before bed. Morning stretches are totally okay, too, so long as you do them after taking a hot shower.1. Standing quadratus lumborum stretch with doorwayBegin in a standing upright position to the side of a doorframe. Cross your outside leg behind the other and hold onto the doorframe, then slowly lean your hips away until you feel a gentle stretch along the side of your body. Hold for 30 seconds.Pro tip: Make sure to maintain a gentle stretch, and only move in a comfortable range.2. Sidelying lumbar rotation stretchBegin lying on your side with your top leg bent at a 90-degree angl e, holding it in place with your bottom arm, with your other leg straight. Your top arm should be straight in front of you on the floor. Reach your top arm straight overhead and directly backward. Try to place your shoulders flat on the floor while keeping your hips facing forward. Hold for 30 seconds.Pro tip: Make sure only to reach as far back as you can without bringing your hips backward.3. Child’s pose With sidebendingBegin on all fours. Sit your hips back as you reach your hands forward and to the side, then continue to sink further into the stretch. Hold for 30 seconds, then repeat to the other side.Pro tip: Make sure to relax into the pose and try to sit your bottom back to your heels as much as possible.4. Hip flexor stretch with chairBegin in a standing position with one leg resting on a table or chair and the leg to be stretched resting on the ground. Keeping your back straight and upright, squeeze your bottom, and slowly shift your weight forward until you feel a stret ch in the front of your hip. Hold for 30 seconds.Pro tip: Make sure to keep your hips and shoulders facing forward, and do not arch your low back.5. Hamstring stretch with strapBegin lying on your back holding the end of a strap secured around one foot, with your legs bent and feet flat on the floor. Straighten your leg with the strap and pull it toward yourself until you feel a stretch in the back of your thigh. Hold for 30 seconds.Pro tip: You can have a slight bend in your knee, but keep your foot straight. This article first appeared on Swirled.

What to Wear to Summer Job Interviews Photo Gallery

What to Wear to Summer Job Interviews Photo Gallery What to Wear to Summer Job Interviews Photo Gallery Real professionals in New York display the styles that will keep you cool and looking sharp on job interviews.By Nina Myers and Karl RozemeyerFashion writer Nina Myers and photographer Karl Rozemeyer took to the streets of New York to find real professionals with a sense of summer style. The Perfect Suit What makes this three-button, notch-lapel suit perfect for summer? It’s super lightweight, wool and it fits him beautifully. Bonus points for buttoning it properly (middle button is secured); half-an-inch of shirt cuff showing; and his brown leather belt is a subtly beautiful detail. Well done! Networking Style Defined This belted navy dress looks almost as structured as a suit. Her shoes, while pointy, have a very low heel, so they are nearly as comfortable as flats. Her chic, chain-link purse is small and easy to carry around a convention center, but large enough to hold business cards and a wallet. Her hair is pulled off her face so you can see her classic pearl earrings. She looks cool and confident. The Ultimate Day-to-Evening Look This woman’s dress fits her perfectly, and the belt gives her a lovely shape. Her ruffled neckline is trendy but not overdone; it adds a point of interest, as do her sparkly chandelier earrings. Her sensible but glamorous gold metallic flats could easily transition from day to night, as could her black-and-white patterned bag, which is large enough to carry a pair of heels if she decides to change. Her makeup is minimal, and her hair is frizz-free and slightly pulled off her face so that her natural beauty shines through. A Look for Every Occasion This outfit is appropriate for many different events because each element is perfectly tailored, elegant and full of texture. The cotton jacket has a tonal pinstripe, and his silk pocket square (while colorful) is not distracting but adds a touch of personal flair. He could be on his way to a job fair or drinks with colleagues. If he replaces his shoes with tennis sneakers and throws on a polo shirt, he could just as easily be headed to a baseball game. Two Summer Wardrobe Essentials: Perfect Khakis, Perfect Dress Shoes What makes them so perfect? The khakis would look just as good dressed down with tennis sneakers or sandals, and the shoes would look equally great with a navy suit or blue jeans. Bottom line: You get your money’s worth. Note the way the khakis break at the bottom? This is how every pair of trousers should fit. Get Noticed Never underestimate the power of a beautiful watch. This vintage Rolex is chunky enough and has a large enough face that it stands out, but thin enough that his jacket cuff slides easily over it. Of course, it doesn’t have to be a Rolex. Any watch with a stainless-steel or brown or black leather bracelet will do. If you’re wearing a suit, make sure it isn’t too sporty and fits the above requirements. How to Look Cool This man’s secret weapon is his two-button wool suit with a touch of linen. The linen keeps him extra cool but doesn’t wrinkle. His crisp white shirt pairs perfectly with his light-blue silk tie. Spectacles are another nice detail, but only if you need them. Grooming note: His face is clean-shaven, and his hair is short. He looks approachable, sharp and professional.Details, Details, Details This woman’s accessories are fantastic for so many different scenarios this summer. Closed-toe shoes would work better in an interview, but otherwise, these are all winners. She beats the heat by taking off her outer layer; but once she’s back in the office, she puts on her tailored jacket or cardigan and immediately looks ultra professional. And the length of her skirt is perfect â€" it’s neither too short nor too long. She could replace the shoes with a pair of leather sandals or flip-flops, the bag for a canvas tote, and pair her lightweight, colorful skirt with a cream-colored tank top or T-shirt and be barbecue- or baseball-ready.Nina Myers is a New York-based fashion writer. She has worked at Esquire Magazine, where she was a men’s fashion market editor, and at Niche Media, where she was fashion editor for nine regional luxury magazines, including Boston Commons, Gotham, Hamptons and LA Confidential.

36 things you should never say to your boss

36 things you should never say to your boss 36 things you should never say to your boss Getting along with your boss can be great, especially when it makes the daily grind that much more enjoyable. You may even feel so close to your boss that you hang out after work or invite them to your wedding. But at the end of the day, it’s important to remember that your friend is still your superior, and there’s a line you probably shouldn’t cross. Honesty is the best policy in the workplace - but like any rule, this one has a few exceptions.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!“It’s important to be cautious with what you say to your boss, as even the slightest slip up could make or break your career,” said Ryan Kahn, a career coach, founder of  The Hired Group, and author of “Hired! The Guide for the Recent Grad.”We talked to several workplace experts to gain their insight on what they consider phrases that you should never say to your boss, even if you ar e friends. Responses ranged from simple questions such as “Can I be honest?” (which implies you are not always truthful) to how you ask for vacation days.Aside from the obvious - like profanity and insults - here are some words and phrases you should  never  utter to your boss, even if you’re friends:‘That’s it! I’m ditching this place and moving to Canada!’You may have some strong feelings about the 2016 presidential election results, but  the workplace isn’t the best place to express them. And threatening to abandon ship doesn’t exactly show you to be much of a team player.“Don’t rant and threaten to quit and move out of the country,” says Rosalinda Oropeza Randall, an etiquette and civility expert and author of ”  Don’t Burp in the Boardroom.” “Leave that to the celebrities.”‘Please, explain to me why on earth you voted for that candidate’Passionate discussions are to be expected in the workplace, but they should really be focused on work-r elated issues. At the end of the day, you’re at work to do work, and arguments about whose candidate was better can be distracting to everyone in the office. You’re not doing your best work when you’re more focused on defending your political stances.Friendships and relationships have been ruined over this election. What’s to say your fragile workplace friendship with your boss will stand the test.‘Can you believe those idiots voted that way?’No matter how well you may think you know your boss and how much you assume your boss would agree with you, the cliché about never assuming could never be truer in this instance.More importantly, to negatively comment about any group is unwise and unprofessional, and it could get you in trouble for harassment.‘That’s impossible’Your manager doesn’t want to hear negativity or a lack of conviction. If you have concerns, state what they are and ask for input. One of the best approaches in deciding whether to share your thoughts with your buddy boss or ask sensitive questions is to put yourself in their shoes, suggests Lynn Taylor, a national workplace expert and the author of ”  Tame Your Terrible Office Tyrant: How to Manage Childish Boss Behavior and Thrive in Your Job.’“Do your comments and questions reflect a positive, can-do, and confident demeanor? Remember loose lips sink ships - so choose your words carefully when you feel challenged at work if you want to thrive in your career,” she says.‘You’re wrong’Openly criticizing or pointing out your boss’s mistake, even if they’re a friend, is a punch to the ego, and it’s a sure way to be excluded from future meetings or ignored the next time you raise your hand to speak, Randall says.If you feel your boss has made an error, there are better ways of addressing this, she explains. You might say, “I may be misinformed on this one, but I was under the impression that …” This prompts them to reconsider and correct the information if necessary without putting up their defenses. “Whatever phrase you use, say it with a helpful and cordial tone,” Randall says.‘Can you ask so-and-so to do it?’Relying on favoritism is not a good look. And anything that makes other people’s jobs harder inevitably makes your boss’s job harder, which they’ll likely remember the next time promotions are discussed.‘I can’t’A “can-do” attitude is always a valued trait, and just because you’re friends, it doesn’t mean you’ll get called on the next time an important project comes up.‘That’s not part of my job’No job description is ever set in stone. “As cross-functional teams remain the order of the day, you’re expected to be flexible and make your boss’s life easier,” explains Taylor.“As a side note, the more skill sets you to accumulate, the more indispensable you are,” she adds.Saying that you’re not willing to go beyond your role shows that you are also not willing to pitch in for the su ccess of the company, says Ryan Kahn, a career coach, founder of  The Hired Group, and author of ”  Hired! The Guide for the Recent Grad.”‘No’Your cooperation is expected, and so is a polite tone - even if you and your boss tend to joke around. ”  Telling your boss ‘no’ is a challenge- and is sometimes necessary - but it can be inappropriate if you don’t phrase it well with an explanation,” Taylor says.“For example, if your boss says, ‘Do you have time to work on the Smith project today?’ you shouldn’t just say, ‘No.’ Instead, try something like, ‘Today will be a challenge if you still want me to focus on that company presentation. Would you prefer I work on this today instead?’‘I don’t know’You may not have the answer to every question, but your best guess and a promise to find out is much better than a shrug of the shoulders, Taylor says. While friends have each others’ backs, “anytime your boss would need to do the work for you, assu me that’s not a path you should take.”‘I’ll try’Some people think that this is an acceptable response, as we all “try” to get things done to our best ability. But it leaves a manager feeling unsure, and when assignments are given, your boss is counting on you, usually with specific deadlines, says Taylor.“Imagine yourself asking, ‘Will you be signing off on my paycheck on the 15th?’ and your boss responding, ‘I will try.'”‘I’m just gonna grab a couple of coffee packets from the kitchen’Believe it or not, pilfering office supplies can be a fireable offense - admitting your crime to your buddy boss is a terrible idea. You’d better believe that when push comes to shove, they’re not going to put their own job on the line to protect yours.‘I’m not paid enough to do that’This one is similar to “that’s not part of my job.”Maybe you’re just trying to be funny - or hint that you deserve a raise - but this phrase is highly inappropriate and un professional, and it tells your boss that you’re not willing to go above and beyond.‘My breakup has got me all messed up. My heart’s just not in it today.’Everyone has personal problems every now and then, and turning to friends for emotional support can help - but this should never come at the expense of your professionalism.“Not to diminish your emotional wounds, but why should your boss’s needs be put on hold because you need time to process your breakup?” Randall asks. “This is when you might consider taking a ‘sick day’ or calling your mom for some love and tenderness.”‘How do I benefit from this?’Sometimes your work involves helping others and other departments. Bosses have little tolerance for those who aren’t team players, Taylor says.‘That’s not what I heard’Avoiding gossip and conjecture is a good idea, as it can backfire. If you’re not sure about something, wait, or you risk appearing unprofessional.‘So, what should we do this weeken d?’Making plans outside work with your boss is fine, but you should be discreet about it - certainly never talk about your plans together in front of the entire office. It could make your coworkers jealous and lead to accusations of preferential treatment.‘I’m sorry, but …’“The caveat essentially cancels any genuine apologetic sentiment,” Taylor says. “A straight, ‘I’m sorry. I’ll be much more aware of this next time’ is the expected response when you mess up.”‘Well, I did my best’This is a cop-out. If you made a mistake and that was your best, that doesn’t speak highly of your abilities. The better response is that you’ll get it right next time.‘I’ve tried that before’Bosses have little tolerance for laziness. “Examine whether you really gave the option a shot before you shoot it down,” Taylor suggests. “Your boss may have something else in mind.”Alternatively, explain that you appreciate the suggestion and tried XYZ with such and su ch as a result, but you would be glad to try something more effective.‘I just assumed that … ‘That phrase causes frustration for many bosses, as they’d rather hear that you made an error in judgment and learned from it instead of excuses. “To err is human, but to defer blame is a career killer,” Taylor says.‘It’s really not my fault; it’s so-and-so’s fault’The blame game is a treacherous path. If you’re innocent, then explain why. Don’t implicate others if you bear the primary responsibility, Taylor says.“Taking responsibility is key,” adds Kahn. “If you’re always seen as someone pointing the finger, eventually your boss is going to question who is really to blame.”‘If I don’t hear from you, I’ll just do … ‘This has a threatening tone, and it certainly crosses the line into unprofessionalism. It’s better to wait than be admonished later.‘I can’t work with him/her’Not playing well with others isn’t good in elementary school, nor is it acceptable in the workplace. It’s assumed that you are capable of getting beyond personality conflicts in the interest of delivering excellent results, no preferential treatment required.‘He’s a jerk’You may be this candid with you friends at home, but not your boss.“The golden rule is something your boss expects you to observe, and casting aspersions on others has no redeeming value. It just reflects badly on you,” Taylor says.‘Why does so-and-so always … ?’Whining is annoying, to friends and bosses alike. “If you have a gripe, better to ask how you can attain a certain privilege and leave others out of the discussion,” she suggests.‘I don’t have a solution’Don’t tell the boss about problems without presenting potential solutions, says Kahn. “Leaders talk about solutions; followers talk about the problems.”‘I’m bored’“You may have a weak moment and share your boredom with the wrong person: your boss,” says Taylor. “You’re being paid to be productive and remain enthusiastic. It’s your responsibility to find ways to make your job interesting.”‘I’ve gotta tell you about last night’s hookup!’Sharing intimate stories at work may not be a wise move, Randall says.“What if a coworker overhears the sizzling conversation? That may open you or your boss up to a sexual harassment or inappropriate conversation write-up,” she explains.‘I’m pretty busy. Can it wait?’It’s your responsibility to ask your boss if priorities have changed, as your objectives must stay aligned with your manager’s. “Priorities are rarely stagnant, so as in most cases, your better option is to ask if you should reshuffle them,” she recommends.‘Can I leave early today since things are slow?’It’s fine if you have to leave early. But don’t say it’s because “things are slow” or you have “nothing to do.”“There are always more projects in the pipeline. Bosses want you to show initiative,” Taylor say s.‘I’m going to be out these days,’ or ‘I’m leaving early tomorrow’Just because you’re friends, it doesn’t mean you should  tell  your boss you’re going on vacation or leaving the office early. It’s always best to ask politely.Of course, you’re not a child, so you don’t have to phrase it as: “May I please take Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday off?” Instead, try: “I was planning to take off Monday through Wednesday, and wanted to make sure that was okay with you.”‘Can I be honest?’“Your boss hopes you’re honest 100% of the time, and what you’re about to say is not an aberration,” said Taylor.‘I heard John just got a raise/promotion.’“If you’re trying to get a raise or promotion, don’t compare yourself to others,” said Taylor. She added that while office gossip does exist, discussing others’ promotions will “likely backfire,” and it’s better to approach your career goals “from a factual standpoint about yourself only.”⠀˜Maybe it’s a generational thing.’“Regardless of what generational category you fall into - Gen X, Y, Z or baby boomer - this phrase is just disparaging. Better to avoid any armchair analysis,” said Taylor.‘I have confidence that you can do this.’“While it’s okay to compliment your boss occasionally, avoid offering patronizing props,” said Taylor, “Especially if your strategy is to pass off work to them!”This article first appeared on Business Insider.

Give and Get LinkedIn RecommendationsFind Your Dream Job

Give and Get LinkedIn Recommendationsâ€"Find Your Dream Job Give and Get LinkedIn Recommendations- Find Your Dream Job Now that you have expanded your LinkedIn Network (Day 8), it is time to utilize that network to help with your job search. LinkedIn allows contacts to give and receive recommendations, which are then embedded into your LinkedIn profile. Recommendations from clients, colleagues, and supervisors affirming your skills and accomplishments will greatly enhance your profile. Hiring managers searching LinkedIn for job candidates will see these recommendations, which will serve as references in advance, and could help you land an interview. Select Five Contacts Today, your goal is to receive five recommendations from LinkedIn connections. However, to get these recommendations, you first have to give recommendations. Make a list of five of your LinkedIn connections from whom you would like to receive a recommendation. Select people who you believe would give you a favorable recommendation, and who you feel you could also recommend. Preferably, they should be people with whom you have worked. If you cannot think of five ideal people with whom you are already connected on LinkedIn, search LinkedIn for staff at your company or former companies. Give a Recommendation Write a LinkedIn recommendation for each of these five people. Again, make sure you select people for whom you feel you can write a positive recommendation, and whom you know think highly of you as well. Writing this recommendation will likely make each contact want to recommend you as well, out of a sense of gratitude. Request a Recommendation Once you have posted a recommendation on a person’s LinkedIn page, send him or her a LinkedIn message explaining that you gave the contact a recommendation. Explain why you chose to give them a recommendation (summarize some of the positive qualities you outlined in the recommendation). Then ask if they might consider writing a recommendation for you. Hopefully, they will say yes, knowing that you wrote a recommendation for them. Manage Your Recommendations Once you receive a recommendation, you will get a notification via email and will be able to see the recommendation. If for any reason you do not want the recommendation on your profile, you can choose not to publish it. Exercise Patience Remember, your five connections may choose not to write you a recommendation in response. However, giving a recommendation is the best way to get a recommendation. If you do not receive a recommendation from these connections, consider giving recommendations to other people in your network, and asking them for recommendations in return. You can also simply ask for a recommendation via LinkedIn’s messaging system. Ask the contact if they feel confident recommending you and if they have the time to do so. This way, they have an out if they feel they cannot give you a recommendation for whatever reason. In your message, be sure to remind the person how you are connected (for example, “I was wondering if you would be kind enough to write me a LinkedIn recommendation due to our five years of working together on the XYZ sales team”). By giving and requesting recommendations, you will enhance your LinkedIn profile, as well as your chances of standing out to a hiring manager.
